Pre 1699 Vaisakhis

The "Vaisakhi" is the name given to the first day of month "Vaisakh" (i.e. April). Vaisakhi is beginning of the New Year in the Punjabi (Bikarmi) calendar and also beginning of the spring & harvest season. The spring season made it a pleasant weather for New Year day celebrations where masses of people used to assemble for the celebration.

Third Guru, Guru Amardas Ji decided to celebrate Vaisakhi day formally by organising religious and cultural celebration. The Sikhs from near and far used to join the special congregation (Sadh-Sanghat) every year on the day to sing Gurbani Kirtan (Hymns) and listen to the Guru's teachings, which was followed by Guru Ka Langaar (free meals) and sports.

It is important to understand the meaning of the Guru & the Amrit that will help to understand the concept of the special Vaisakhi of 1699.
